In the vibrant, bustling city of Buea, where youthful energy meets tradition, a new generation of leaders is emerging, and at the forefront stands Welisane Maagbor, a Cameroonian youth advocate whose commitment to gender equality and reproductive health rights is reshaping conversations across her country and beyond. At an age when many are still finding their footing, Maagbor has already dedicated her life to empowering others, proving that leadership is not defined by age but by heart, courage, and purpose.

Maagbor’s journey began with a strong academic foundation that prepared her for her work in advocacy and youth empowerment. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Women and Gender Studies from the University of Buea, where she studied gender dynamics, social policy, and community development. She then pursued a Master’s degree in Conflict Resolution, also at the University of Buea, focusing on negotiation, peacebuilding, and strategies for resolving social and community conflicts. This combination of gender studies and conflict resolution gave her the knowledge and skills to understand structural inequalities and to design practical solutions for empowering young people, particularly girls and women.

Her professional path is marked by a series of roles that reflect both influence and impact. As a WhatGirlsWant Focal Point within the ATHENA Network, Maagbor works closely with young women across Africa to elevate their priorities in spaces where they are often underrepresented. She organizes dialogues, crafts advocacy strategies, and mentors peers, urging them to claim leadership roles in sectors that matter to their futures. Her work here is not just about policy, it is about people, inspiring young women to see themselves as architects of change.

Expanding her reach even further, Maagbor serves as an Ambassador for the HER Voice Fund through Y+ Global, a platform that connects young leaders working on sexual and reproductive health and rights. In this capacity, she champions access to information, education, and supportive health services for adolescents and young women, a mission that resonates deeply in regions where such discussions are often silenced. Her voice, both powerful and poised, bridges communities and networks, strengthening the collective push for rights and dignity.

Maagbor’s impact is not confined to titles or affiliations. She has personally facilitated leadership and empowerment workshops, guiding more than a hundred young people, particularly girls, through practical skills that sharpen confidence, civic engagement, and self-advocacy. These sessions are more than training events, they are transformational spaces where participants begin to see their own potential reflected back at them.

Through her work, Maagbor continues to inspire a generation of young women to take charge of their lives and communities. She has become a beacon for youth advocacy, showing that meaningful change requires persistence, empathy, and the courage to speak up. Her influence extends beyond Cameroon, connecting local initiatives to broader international conversations on gender, youth empowerment, and health rights.

Welisane Maagbor’s story is not just one of personal achievement, it is a testament to what can happen when passion meets purpose. Through her work, she is helping to dismantle barriers that have long limited young women’s access to leadership and health resources in Cameroon. With every workshop she leads and every platform she occupies, she inspires others to believe that change is possible, not someday, but today.
