Screens just got juicier!
Lee and 20th TV, part of Disney TV Studios, have been working tirelessly to bring Waiting To Exhale to screens and now, it’s about show time!
Empire’s Lee Daniel is set to produce a reboot of 1995 iconic drama series Waiting To Exhale and yes,
ABC has given a script commitment with penalty.
Written by Attica Locke (When They See Us) and Tembi Locke (Never Have I Ever), the duo will produce with Daniels and Marc Velez via Lee Daniels Entertainment, Hemingway and 3 Arts’ Richard Abate, Jermaine Johnson and Will Rowbotham, Deadline reports. Terry McMillan, author of the novel on which the film was based is in board as consulting producer.
About the reboot, THR said;
“The ABC project will center on a new generation of women — the daughters of the original quartet — while keeping the humor, sincerity and sensuousness of the film.
ABC has committed to a rigorous set of inclusivity standards for its programming, both in front of and behind the camera, and its early development slate reflects that. In addition to Waiting to Exhale, the network is developing a Wonder Years reboot centered on a Black family; family drama Chicano, which counts Natalie Chaidez, Eva Longoria and Forest Whitaker (who directed Waiting to Exhale) among its EPs; a family comedy focused on an LGBTQ couple and Old-ish, a Black-ish spinoff starring Laurence Fishburne and Jenifer Lewis.”
The 1995 Waiting to Exhale feature served as Forest Whitaker’s directorial debut. It starred Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon, and Loretta Devine.
About the 1995 movie:
Navigating through careers, family and romance, four friends bond over the shortcomings in their love lives — namely, the scarcity of good men. Both as the “other woman,” Savannah (Whitney Houston) and Robin (Lela Rochon) carry on relationships with married men, each believing their lovers will leave their wives for them. On the flip side, Bernadine (Angela Bassett) ends up alone when her husband divorces her for his mistress. Meanwhile, Gloria (Loretta Devine) finds love with a new neighbor.
