Kenya’s former first lady Lucy Kibaki passed awayearly this morning while undergoing treatment in Bupa Cromwell hospital in London, President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced.Lucy Kibaki, wife of former President Mwai Kibaki has been unwell for the past one month and has been receiving treatment in Kenya and subsequently in London.
Her Excellency will be remembered for her immense contribution in the development of our country. Especially notable was her Excellency’s virtues of leadership and commitment to improving the well being of the ordinary Kenyans particularly her efforts in tackling HIV/AIDS which will remain an inspiration to many,President Kenyatta said in an announcement issued in Nairobi.
On behalf of all Kenyans and my Government, I convey condolences to his Excellency Hon. Mwai Kibaki, family and friends, Kenyatta said.
Born in 1940, Lucy Kibaki was Kenya’s First lady from 2002 to 2013.
Lucy Kibaki, who is survived by four children, will perhaps be remembered for her severe- no nonsense attitude and ardent defender of her husband’s government.
She was last seen in public in August 2010 during a national function when the East African nation promulgated a new constitution.
Since then, there has been speculation on her whereabouts and health condition.
